Yoshida City and Koyama Castle Tower

Bay Area

Suruga Bay tea fields, castles, and the view of a lifetime

Yoshida Town is suitable for green tea cultivation as it is close to the Makinohara Plateau, a large green tea farming area. You'll find the culture, history, and local cuisine fascinating.

Koyama Castle—a symbol of Yoshida Town—was the grounds for a fierce battle that took place among warring lords in the late-16th century. You'll learn about this history in the museum inside the castle. While inside, visit the observation deck for a commanding vista. The 21-meter-high observatory deck commands a 360-degree panoramic view of the tea fields, the coast of Cape Omaezaki, Mt. Fuji in the distance, as well as the Southern Japan Alps.

Another interesting fact about Yoshida is that eel farming is very famous here. The secret of its tasty eel is the mineral-rich subterranean water of the Oi River used for eel breeding. As you can imagine, Yoshida is famous for the decadently delicious smoke-infused tender meat of charcoal-barbecued seasoned eel. There are eel restaurants aplenty, so why not drop by one and delight your taste buds? One prime example is Unagi Yagihide, only an 8-minute walk from Koyama Castle.
